Building Strength Through Stories

Storytelling, one of the oldest and most powerful means of sharing history and values, strengthens communities.  Combining oral and written words with the arts – theatre, movement, music, film etc. – is a powerful vehicle to help children learn concepts, develop language skills, enhance creative thinking and imagination, as well as deepen cultural understanding.  Importantly, stories help children express how they feel.

As we rebuild from our shared hurricane experience, we are reminded of how much we have in common and the importance of community – within and across borders.  A special story time event, Hurricane Heroes, aims to strengthen our communities by helping our children process their feelings, connect to others who have lived through similar experiences, regain a sense of control and build resilience.  Our team includes a storyteller and a children’s book writer to lead a storytelling session focusing on the hurricane experience through a child’s eyes and the responses of heroes of all kinds who restore order and save lives.  The interactive session will include storytelling, group discussions, drawing and coloring for children to process and share their views. For children 3-8.
